Our collective body suffers in every loss, every destroyed building becomes the next wound. But the phantom pains of the collective body are easier to endure than alone, within the confines of your own tiny body. On the paper, there is dirt, soot and rust from the buildings: traces of time and pain. These are the layers that resonate with the layers of experience that we feel on our skin now. Unlike stone and metal, paper is more fragile than the human body. Traces on it lose the dimension of physical pain. The technique of blind printing on paper allows you to make three-dimensional prints from a variety of objects, preserving the fragile states on its surface. Paper, which is literally the document on which we record the most important things: birth, baptism, death, is so fragile physically. The memory that is not given a form of action is so fragile. In this house, losses are revealed. The temple is filled with imprints - a reference to erased and destroyed histories. The installation is a gesture of describing what was saved and restored in a time of such large-scale destruction of the war - a choice that we make every day.
The project was launched under the title ‘Under the single skin’ in 2023 through the collaboration of Gallery101 and AVAT - during the residency, Ukrainian artists together with Taiwanese authors rethought the processes of memory and identity formation through working with the city's spaces.
The project is presented in the Lviv Skansen, a church in the village of Yazlivchyk. 28.09-01.12.2024.
