On June 11, 2025, the exhibition "Burliuk. Symbols" is a project that opens to the public more than 30 little-known works by David Burliuk from private collections. The exhibition will last until July 27 at the Vakulenko Art Consulting Gallery (8 Kostelna St.). The entrance is free.
David Burliuk is a Ukrainian artist, futurist, poet and thinker who is called one of the brightest representatives of the avant-garde of the early twentieth century. Born in the Kharkiv region, he went from rural landscapes to international recognition in Europe, Japan, and the United States. His work spans decades of experimentation with form, color, technique, and artistic language.
The exhibition "Burliuk. Symbols" focuses on the symbolic dimension of his paintings. Each work is not only an image, but a text waiting to be read. Birds, pipes, flowers, boats, dogs, shells, bottles are repeated elements that turn into visual codes, allusions, memories, and the artist's inner messages. The exhibits include still lifes, seascapes, rural landscapes, and scenes from everyday life, which demonstrate the versatility of Burliuk's imaginative thinking.
The project aims to re-emphasize the Ukrainian origin of David Burliuk, an artist who has long been appropriated by other cultural narratives. He has repeatedly declared himself as a Ukrainian, and our task is to remind him of this by expanding the space for his presence in the Ukrainian artistic discourse.
The exhibition invites visitors not only to contemplate, but also to participate: we do not impose interpretations, but offer keys to meanings, allusions, and hidden stories.
