Who is a "Cossack" in the twenty-first century? Is it an archaic image from the ancient past or a modern symbol of a modern warrior - a defender of the Motherland and the Ukrainian people? In a new series of works, Sasha Bob addresses this question, bringing the Cossacks to the forefront. Its emergence contributed to the consolidation of Ukrainian society in the fight against enemies and was an important step towards state-building.
For many centuries, the image of the Cossack has been the embodiment of strength, will, power and thirst for struggle. This myth-making image became even more urgent after the start of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Cossacks have turned from a historical phenomenon into a reality we are already familiar with today. In the artist's eyes, every Ukrainian became a Cossack, began to fight for freedom and the right to existence of their country. In parallel with the masculine storyline, where the Cossack is the quintessence of everything male, the artist paints the image of a Madonna - the personification of the feminine. The artist boldly uses partially modified Christian symbolism, referring to the image of the Virgin Mary, the original metaphor of a woman-mother and guardian of the Ukrainian people.
