Ustym Fedko

Ustym Fedko approaches nature not as a subject to replicate, but as a force to engage with. Echoing the spirit of early poetry by Arthur Rimbaud, his work is driven by sensation and inner rhythm. Winds, waves, and shifting skies emerge in abstract compositions where emotion outweighs form. Influenced by Alexander Archipenko’s exploration of color, Fedko constructs painterly surfaces through bold contrasts and layered structures, allowing imagined landscapes to take shape in enamel pieces and mosaic-like reliefs.

His creative energy is relentless. On canvas, natural elements collide and merge — water, air, and earth twisting into dynamic, expressive movements. For Fedko, emotion remains the primary catalyst, surpassing purely formal concerns of color or composition.

Fire plays a crucial role in his artistic process. It is both a collaborator and an adversary: a force that challenges and transforms. Whether fusing enamel or experimenting with copper and glass, he treats heat as part of an almost alchemical dialogue that gives rise to unexpected forms.

Born in Kyiv in 1971, Fedko received his early training at the Lviv College of Applied Arts, specializing in ceramics (graduated in 1991). He later continued his studies in monumental art at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, completing his education in 1998. He is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, within the monumental art section.

Fedko works across multiple disciplines, including monumental art, sculpture, painting, and enamel on copper. His large-scale projects can be found in public spaces such as Kyiv’s Central Railway Station, St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral, and Botanichna Metro Station, among others.

His work has been exhibited widely in both solo and group shows, and he has taken part in international symposiums dedicated to sculpture and enamel art across Europe, including Poland, France, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovakia. He currently lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.
