Monotype Series. Year of creation: February 2025
This series is the result of my visual exploration of abandoned places in the town of Brody, located in the Galicia region. The ten monotypes — five depicting a ruined synagogue and five showing fragments of an old Jewish cemetery — are an attempt to touch, through art, the remnants of a vanished world.
The synagogue, worn down by time, and the cracked, moss-covered gravestones are silent witnesses to a life that disappeared along with generations. Inscriptions in Yiddish — now unreadable to most — become symbols of a fading cultural layer. It is a language of the dead, yet it still whispers through stone, trees, and silence.
The works are created using monotype technique on MUSE paper. Sheet size — 30×40 cm, image size — 20.5×25.5 cm. Painted with Amsterdam acrylic paints. The muted pastel palette with golden, bronze, and silver hues conveys not only the rough texture of ancient stone but also a sense of sacredness, fragility, and silence. The coarse surface of the prints emphasizes the materiality of time, where each crack is a trace of a lived fate.
This is more than just an art series — it is a form of visual archaeology, where art becomes a bridge between generations. It is essential not to lose that connection. Even if places are forgotten, memory lives on through images.
