Gonchar Ivan Makarovich (January 27, 1911 - June 18, 1993) - Ukrainian Soviet sculptor, artist, ethnographer, collector. Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR (1960), People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1991), laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after I. T. Shevchenko (1989).

He worked in the field of easel and monumental sculpture.

Collected a large collection of folk art. In his own house he set up the first private museum in the Ukrainian SSR, which was opened for public viewing in 1959. The collection numbers about seven thousand exhibits: icons, folk clothes, wood and metal products, musical instruments. A separate section of the collection was made up of about 20 thousand archival photographs.

Ivan Makarovich Gonchar died in 1993. In the same year, on the basis of the private collection of the museum worker and sculptor I. Gonchar, the state «Museum of Ivan Gonchar» was founded.
