
Peter Zakharovich Yemets was born on July 16, 1944 in Ukraine, in the village of Bolshaya Vovnyanka, Tarashchansky district, Kiev region.
After graduating from high school, he studied at the Tallinn High School of Mechanics, where he got the specialty of an underwater cartographer. At the same time, he graduated from the courses of painting and graphics.
Upon his return to Ukraine, he worked for a long time as the head of an art workshop in the village Volodarka, Kiev region.
From 1977 to 1985 there were 12 personal exhibitions of the artist. He worked mainly in the genre of still life and landscape.
In 1981, P. Yemets was admitted to the
Union of Artists of the USSR.From 1986 to 1989 he worked as a liquidator of the accident consequences at the
Chernobyl nuclear power plant. During this period, he painted several hundred paintings, the vast majority of which were included in the collection “
The Bells of Chernobyl”.
In 1990, the documentary “The Stalker of the Chernobyl Zone” about Peter Yemets (directed by
Peter Olar) was made.
Since 1988, the Chernobyl collection of the artist had repeatedly been exhibited in Ukraine, from 1990 to 1994 - in the United States and Europe:
• Sweden, Denmark, Finland (1990-1991);
• New Arc Airport (USA, 1991);
• New York (USA, Ukrainian Institute of America, 1992);
• New York (United States, United Nations Organization, 1992);
• West Berlin (Germany, 1992);
• Mascalucia (Sicily, Italy, 1993);
• Catania (Sicily, Italy, 1993);
• Tulfes (Austria, 1994);
• Strasbourg (France, 1994).
In 1996, “
The Bells of Chernobyl” album was published in circulation of 5 thousand copies, which included 143 reproductions of paintings of the same series.
In 1997, the artist’s name was entered into the database of prominent figures of our time according to the version of the Scientific Association of the American Biographical Institute.
At the request of the
Ukrainian National Museum in Chicago in 1999, Peter Yemets painted about 30 author copies of his most famous paintings of the Chernobyl cycle for this institution.
