Egor Zigura's project "Fractures of Memory" continues the famous series of sculptures "AfterToday", focusing on the themes of transience of time and vulnerability of human culture. Through large-scale, monumental works that retain the features of ancient aesthetics and are deeply patinated by time, the artist explores the fragility of civilisations prone to destruction and oblivion. The cracks in the sculptures, frozen moments captured in bronze, reflect not only the greatness but also the shadowy side of human heritage.
In his new works, Zigura explores the concept of memory – its fissures that leave imprints of our culture, its highs and lows. The artist draws attention to the cyclical decay that can engulf societies mired in overconsumption and spiritual desolation, inviting visitors to reflect on their own place in the flow of history.
Egor Zigura's AfterToday project stands as a landmark in contemporary Ukrainian art, reigniting interest in large-scale sculpture that integrates both into urban spaces and museum settings. Zigura operates at the intersection of classicism and postmodernism, drawing on ancient mythology as a tool for critically reflecting on modernity. Inspired by the legacy of Greco-Roman art, the artist creates bronze sculptures marked by cracks and enriched with a noble patina, symbolizing how easily a civilization can be lost in the abyss of time, losing both its coherence and significance.
Zigura continues to evolve and reinterpret his project, adding new works to the series that reveal new facets of his reflections on the decay and vulnerability of civilizations. In these new pieces, the artist revisits the theme of cyclical disintegration that threatens societies mired in excessive consumption and spiritual emptiness.
The latest sculptures in this series enrich the original concept, bringing in subtle nuances that express the artist’s introspection on the fleeting nature of existence and the inevitable degradation of material culture. In these works, the motifs of shadow and reflection, past and future, are fused in a symbolic dimension where gold, surface cracks, suspended time, and transparent forms evoke a sense of irreversible loss while also hinting at the possibility of rethinking.
AfterToday takes on a new resonance as a process of contemplation and an attempt to transcend traditional conceptions of sculpture, where each colossus serves as a mirror of society, reflecting not only its grandeur but also the fragility of human existence. Through these images, the artist challenges the force of time and its destructive power, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own place within the historical process and the inescapable dominance of Chronos.
The exhibition will last until 26 January 2025.
