Karina Danylchuk

Karina Danylchuk, a Ukrainian artist, grew up in Mykolaiv region, lives in Kyiv (and sometimes in Khmelnytskyi). Her main themes are birds, the vulnerability of nature, and an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic vision of the world. The main material is watercolor, and since 2024 she has been working on land art projects.

I am Karina Danylchuk, a Ukrainian artist born in the Mykolaiv region. I currently live in Kyiv. I began my artistic career in 2018, and in 2021, I first exhibited my works in the Khmelnytskyi region. In 2024, I continue my activities, participating in Ukrainian and international group exhibitions.

My primary medium is watercolor, but in 2024 I also started creating land art and will continue to explore this direction in my practice. At the beginning of my career, I worked with watercolor as a means to express the vulnerability of birds and nature, focusing on the unique individuality of each bird.

My artistic vision has gradually evolved for many reasons (the war in Ukraine, motherhood, and working with a psychologist). The delicate images of birds now more profoundly reflect my worldview. The way I perceive my existence and future is filled with darkness (which is why you see so many dark colors in my watercolors); the current situation has shattered the foundations of my perception, and I feel the breath of an impending catastrophe for humanity.

How can I live my daily life when everything is only getting worse? The answer lies in preparation. In my art, I explore how we can be warned about a catastrophe and survive. I analyze how people (including my ancestors in Ukraine) survived for many years during times of famine, repression, and the lack of civilization in old villages. I am constantly conducting this research for my upcoming land art projects. Right now, I am working on art that addresses how to be forewarned. I am searching for signals to prepare not only people but also animals and plants. I understand that this may seem pointless, but I am seeking a way to show how this situation breaks my heart. Humanity cannot survive on this planet alone.

A bit of general information about me:

You can find my works in various online galleries such as Artfinder (UK), Tricera (Japan), RtistiQ (Singapore), The Artling (Singapore), and others.

In 2022-2023, I also volunteered as a content creator for the local Ukrainian artists' community UArtist. In 2023, I became a mother and am now piecing together a new version of myself.

I find my inspiration in birdwatching and land art projects from around the world.
