One of the central themes for my works is femininity, which is depicted in visually exaggerated images of women, unnatural beauty with hyperbolized parts of the face. They seem to become similar to each other and begin to lose the personal qualities that distinguish them from others. They play roles dictated by society.
In doing so, I examine society's influence on the boundaries of beauty and how these boundaries then affect women to a greater extent than men. Or how society affects the idea of women's roles, inequality, stereotypes, as well as the limitations and definitions of female beauty.
Our entire culture begins to "hysterically get younger", the beauty industry aims to make 60-year-olds look 20-30 years younger. But we will not cancel old age, physiological changes, eventually death, because it is a part of life, but in the public space it is all hushed up.
However, some of my paintings have different content and ideas. This happened after the Russian attack on Ukraine. The war that Russia brought to my country changed my vision of the world and people. I have paintings about the indomitable will and courage of the Ukrainian people.
Also undergoing transformation, development and research, my work now reflects a vision of female power and subjectivity, revealing the woman as a central figure in my paintings. The works offer a unique perspective on the female experience, allowing viewers to see and feel the strength, ingenuity and genius that can be embodied in a woman.
One of the wonderful examples of my work is a painting about Sofya Yablonska. Through this work, I draw attention to an outstanding woman who is forgotten in history, but who is important for cultural development. Yablonska, as the first woman to travel around the world at the beginning of the 20th century, became an example of courage and independence, erasing the stereotypes of her time and defining new ways of development for women.
I show Yablonska not only as a photographer and writer, but also as a strong personality with a deep inner world. Through the use of colors, composition and details, I convey her inner strength, making her image unforgettable and one that everyone should be inspired by.
In the paintings, I combine my emotional conviction, reflected in the contrasts of colors and textures, with imagery and symbolism.
I use different materials: canvas without stretchers, acrylic, pastel, spray, as well as textile material. These are laces of different thickness, color and size. I like to combine them with canvas. The paintings become like carpets or tapestries, which is what I tried to achieve. The use of textiles in my work adds depth and texture to the images, perhaps symbolizing a connection to tradition, handiwork and women's pursuits.
When I studied at the Academy of Arts, we practiced various techniques from batik painting to tapestry weaving. It was exciting! When my friends and I were working on our own clothing collection a few years ago, we used these same ropes to decorate our jackets. Then I realized that this material would be ideal for my paintings.
I am an artist from the city of Khmelnytskyi, and my art embodies the multifaceted nature of my experiences and my own views on the modern world. Studying at the Lviv Academy of Arts at the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts, I learned techniques and skills that allowed me to understand the variety of forms and functions of art.
But I am not limited to academic education. I feel the need to cover topics and concepts that interest me, regardless of traditional norms and expectations.
