The capital of Latvia, its political, economic and cultural center. After the accession of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) to the USSR in 1940, it became one of the largest ports in the Soviet Union. After the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991, Riga again became the capital of the sovereign Republic of Latvia.
